The 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games Host Society welcomed the Arctic Winter Games International Committee to the South Slave region this past week.
The Arctic Winter Games International Committee visited Fort Smith and Hay River from September 11-13, 2016 to review the Host Society’s plans and preparations being made to host the Arctic Winter Games in the Northwest Territories in March 2018.
“I was very pleased and excited to welcome the International Committee back to the South Slave and the Northwest Territories,” said 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games Host Society President Gregory Rowe. “The meetings gave us the opportunity to showcase our facilities, our communities and our amazing volunteers and explain, in detail to the International Committee members, our plans for hosting the games.”
Since March 2015 when it was announced that the South Slave had won the right to host the 2018 Arctic Winter Games, the Host Society has been reviewing and revising its winning bid submission for presentation to the International Committee this week.
“I also wanted to thank our staff and all our volunteers for the tremendous effort and hard work they put in leading up to and during the visit,” said Mr. Rowe. “Of course we have lots more work ahead of us, but the initial response by the International Committee from our meetings was very positive and confirmed that we are on the right path.”
The Arctic Winter Games International Committee is comprised of 12 members representing six of the contingents that participate in the Arctic Winter Games (NWT, Nunavut, Yukon, Alaska, Northern Alberta, and Greenland).
