The snowy owl was chosen to represent the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games (AWG 2018) with contribution from the youth, community members and elders of the South Slave region! Kechi is the ‘Messenger,' the wise one, non-judgemental and an Elder. The name Kechi (pronounced Kee-chee) comes from the Cree Language and means “Power”. The AWG 2018 Theme; "Find Your Power," is supported by the mascot and inspired by the participants!
History of Kechi
In the Spring of 2016, a request went out to all the youth in the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories (NWT) through school boards, principals, social media, and community posters. The request was directed to all young people to submit a concept or idea for the AWG 2018 mascot. Submissions were accepted in the form of sketches, detailed drawings, stories, paintings, etc.
As of May 31, 2016 over 80 submissions were received! The AWG 2018 Host Society Board chose their favourite five submissions and these concepts were brought to the current culture committee and Elders in the Region for review, discussion, and consideration (the submissions were the Bear, Fox, Lynx, Owl, and Wolf). Upon review, the Host Society Board chose the Owl; specifically, the snowy owl, and thus the official mascot of the AWG 2018 was born!
To name the mascot, Chipewyan, Cree, and Slavey, language educators in the South Slave Region were consulted. Words were discussed for translation, that were easily pronounced and reproduced. Consideration was given to values and ideas such as friendship, competition, respect, winner, messenger, inclusive, community, power, partnership, etc.
Kechi represents an older, wiser female snowy owl. Female snowy owls never become completely white—remaining brownish with darker markings. Males are whiter than females, getting more so as they get older.
Kechi is 11 years old. The number 11, is a master number, the most intuitive of all numbers. It is instinctual, charismatic, dynamic and capable when its sights are set on a concrete goal. It is also associated with faith, psychics, and strength. 2018 is well represented with an 11 year old, wise Snowy Owl.
Want to have Kechi attend your event?
Kechi is available to attend pre-game and Game-time events by submitting a Mascot Request Form for approval three (3) weeks before the proposed event. Kechi can make appearances at sport test events, rallies, volunteer events, sponsor announcement events and activities, youth and community events. The Host Society reserves the right to approve all requested appearances and will not approve an appearance that would jeopardize Kechi’s public image. Priority will be given to 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games events.
