On January 26, we will be just 50 days away from the start of the 2018 Arctic Winter Games. The Games, which are being co-hosted by Hay River and Fort Smith in the South Slave, will run from March 18-24, 2018.
One of the things we are most excited about is watching not just the host communities, but the entire circumpolar north, come together to support the Games. While most of our volunteers are from the South Slave, we'd also like to give a shout out to everyone who will be travelling from the other contingents to share their time and skills.
At last count, we had 1,100 volunteers signed up, and more people are putting their names forth every day. As sporting trials in most participating contingents finish up next week, we expect more volunteers will sign up then once they know their availability. For those people looking to sign up, you can go to the AWG website at https://awg2018.org; select the dropdown menu "VOLUNTEER," and choose the logo of the community in which you want to volunteer. Volunteers must also provide a completed criminal record check, which you can find more information about on our "VOLUNTEER" page.
If you are not connected to the Internet there are a few options allowing you to volunteer. You can call the office at 867-874-2345 or drop by the office nearest you; Hay River - 62 Woodland Dr. Suite 101, Hay River, NT X0E 1G1; or Fort Smith - 195 McDougal Centre, Fort Smith, NT X0E 0P0.
"We are so thankful for each and every volunteer that is helping to make the South Slave Arctic Winter Games a reality," said Greg Rowe, host society president. "Whether you are helping out with the sports, photography and videography, food services, security, set up and take down, data entry, safety, or any other role, everyone's contribution is so valuable."
Fort Smith and Hay River have been working very hard to prepare for the Games, and are excited to welcome participants, coaches, officials, and visiting spectators in just a few short weeks.
