Media Advisory – 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games

Response to Call for Cultural Performances at the 2018 AWG:

The 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games would like to apologize for the way that our call for Northern performers and musicians was perceived recently.  It was not our intention to disrespect the arts community, but rather to fulfill the mandate of the Arctic Winter Games to promote not only athletic competition and social exchange, but also cultural exhibition.

Our call for performers was meant to make the Games more inclusive of the arts community, and give interested performers a chance to become involved in the Games outside of the sporting component. The Arctic Winter Games rely heavily on community involvement to run smoothly, and we are thankful for everyone who helps out in any capacity.

To confirm, our cultural program will include financial compensation for selected performing artists at the opening and closing ceremonies; and local performances and to host workshops for participants in Fort Smith, Hay River and on the Kátł’odeeche First Nation. An updated call for performers will be issued in the near future.

As in past Games, all nine contingents have also been invited to bring cultural delegates who will perform throughout the week as well as at the special gala event.
