Jamie Crowe helps his team to another dominating victory at Cumbernauld, plus news from the British fell and hill relay champs in our off-road running round-up
LINDSAYS SCOTTISH RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS, Cumbernauld, October 19
Jamie Crowe propelled Central AC to their sixth win in a row, some 100 metres ahead of a captivating battle for silver between Cambuslang Harriers and Edinburgh University, the former prevailing by one second, Denis Shepherd reports.
The Central victory was laced with emotion as they were without the presence of the late Alastair Hay, who had had such an influence on the National XC Relays.
With Luca Fanottoli keeping Central in touch on the opening leg, Aidan Thompson edged ahead before Cameron Milne set up a winning lead for Crowe to consolidate.
Edinburgh AC received the Marjory Cook Trophy, initiated to honour their late stalwart club official who died in 2021, after winning the women’s race to halt a seven-long stranglehold by Edinburgh University.
Nancy Scott set up a lead on the opening leg, with Beth Ansell and Elsa Palmer repelling all challenges to leave Kirsty Walker to win as she liked by 48 seconds. Shettleston Harriers were clear of the defending champions in second.
The unchallenged masters’ winners were Corstorphine AAC (men) and Giffnock North (women) with the over-50 titles going to Cambuslang and Edinburgh AC respectively.
In the younger age groups Giffnock North were dominant in the boys’ race, striking gold and silver ahead of Team East Lothian, while Lasswade AAC took the girls’ title for the first time ahead of Giffnock North as Strathearn Harriers took bronze for their first ever medals at this event.

BRITISH FELL AND HILL RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS, Appletreewick, October 19
Dark Peak Fell Runners’ male and female teams claimed the gold medals in one of the most beautiful parts of Wharfedale as 159 teams took the start in an event hosted by Wharfedale Harriers and sponsored by Pete Bland Sports.
Andrew Douglas (Westerlands CC) led home the first leg runners but on the long second leg, fastest pair Bertie Houghton & Tom Spencer of Dark Peak opened up a lead of more than three minutes over Carnethy HRC whose Luke Fisher and Alexander Chepelin were quickest on the third (navigation) leg. However, they were still nearly two minutes behind Dark Peak whose last leg runner, Finlay Grant, extended their lead to secure their third successive victory in the event. On the final leg, Ben Rothery set the fastest time to take Ilkley Harriers from sixth place into the bronze medal position.
Sara Willhoit (Mercia Fell Runners) repeated her 2023 performance by setting the fastest women’s time on the opening leg. Eve Pannone & Antonia Fan (Ambleside AC) were the quickest pair on the second leg, taking their club into the lead. However, on the navigation leg, Laura Robertson and Lisa Watson (Dark Peak) caught up and opened up a small gap over Ambleside. The final Dark Peak Runner, Emily Cowper-Coles, extended the lead to over two minutes with the second fastest time behind Nichola Jackson (Keswick AC). Helm Hill Runners were third.
In the masters’ categories, Calder Valley Fell Runners were the first men while the top women were the Dark Peak W50 team.
